When in Aus (where I'm from) I just grab a sturdy stick and work with that. I usually chamfer around the top, sharpen the bottom into a bullet tip and generally shape it to be comfortable to hold. I also strengthen the tip by firing it.
Problem is that if you use fallen wood it will split after a day or two. I've wanted to harvest fresh wood and learn how to treat it so that it will hold up but never gotten around to it.
