That's how I and many others have gone about learning.
Read and educate yourself. Practice until you can efficiently tie all knots, set up appropriate anchors and systems you're likely to encounter in the wild. Then get out there and go for it.
You'll still be a gumby, but at least you'll be an educated gumby.
