>>680271good for a first fly. the leech is a key fly to have. you'll catch fish with that fly I'm sure. I have a lot of luck with purple/brown marabou tail with brown hackle and black chenille body.
another good one is the water boatman. wind a small amount of tinsel around the shank, tie off a section of black feather at the back, wind with brown chenille, tie some rubber across the middle of the hook, finish off the chenille windings to the top, pull the black feather over the top and tie it off and lacquer. I think its about a 12. kind of looks like pic related. very very good fly. at least here in the fall there are very large diving beetles about the size of a quarter or loonie dollar coin (canadian here).
Others that are very useful and easy to tie are hare's ear and pheasant tail nymphs in a 12.
