>>923859I make less than $5k a year. I fish for food as well as farm for food. My worst "expense" for fishing is the annual license ($40.) Everything else that I buy for fishing is paid by making flies and lures and selling them. Powering my PC to shitpost on 4chan costs more per month than anything else. ($0.06 an hour)
If you go to your local grocery store and check the prices of fish per ounce, you'll find that buying a bit of monofilament, some bait hooks, and using a cane pole with a twig bobber and some worm/insect/baitfish is an outrageously cheap method of getting near infinite food. Put a ribbon on a hook and suddenly you have a durable lure for a wide range of fish species (pic). Everything beyond that is merely commercialized fluff and sport fishing.
Thus, if you want to drop serious money on fishing, you can. But, you don't need to do that to have fun or to feed yourself. Be warned, if you want to save money, you'll need to not buy every trinket and fluffed up commercialized crap lure and reel you see. For some reason, fishermen blow way too much money on stuff they never even use.
