1. Use a lure with a bit of weight, so you can cast it far. Aim for near the weeds/rocks/shore.
2. Don't use one that's too heavy though, or else it will sink and you'll have to reel it in too fast to catch anything.
3. Don't reel it in too fast, you want it to have a bit of depth. 2-3 ft above the bottom should be decent.
4. Repeat...
That's really all there is too it, basically. It gets INCREDIBLY repetitive when they aren't biting.
When you feel a nibble, that you're sure isn't a weed, start playing with it a bit. Take it side to side, slow down, speed up... be erratic. Remember, you ARE a fish that just got poked by a bigger one. You're fucking freaking the fuck out. Then, wait for the lure to get taken, and set the hook.
Some people move the tip of their pole around in a figure eight rotation while reeling in... it might help. I don't know...
Use a steel leader if you're fishing for something with teeth (see my pic, we fish for Pike which have sharp teeth).
If you've got a fish on, reel it in gingerly... Your lures may not be able to withstand as much violence as your live bait hooks.
