just creating this thread to aware you unaware guys on SAR.
Many of your local SAR teams are always looking for personnel to bolster their teams. Some locations require more experience than others. From what Ive gathered, the more difficult the area (ie snow, mountain, etc), the more likely it is that experience is wanted. Though many teams do have several units within (Swift water, helo, dog, rope, ground), some of which are acceptable for complete plebs.
Training opportunities do exist within SAR. Some include basic survival courses from experienced members, possibly advanced survival (if youre in a high use area), medical (usually teams will offer CPR/first aid, some will offer first responder, and I dont know if any offer EMT-B), technical rescue (cave, mine, swift water, rope, confined, dive, urban, and many others).
Some teams require you to be 18, others at 14. Where Im at the under 18 crowd is part of an explorer post, dont know if its like that throughout the country. Its a nice way to be involved with the county and community if thats what youre looking for. It can also help lead to job (though dont count on it, there better options) with the county. If youre in the under 18 crowd, it really is a great way to get some experience, if youre looking to work in the law enforcement or rescue fields. Even if youre not looking for a job, its a great way to have fun , meet people, and feel important.
I urge you guys to at least check out your team, usually typing "[county name] county search and rescue," will get you to your local SAR teams page.
If any SAR guys want to add more, please do so.
