To answer your question: yes, you will look autistic. But ultimately, who cares? You're going outside to get away from society and their judgment, not to be constrained by it.
I still wear old-fashioned wool pants, canvas gaiters, leather boots, and a waxed canvas backpack when I go hiking. If I'm hunting I bring my old lever-gun, a wood-handled hunting knife, and even wear a campaign hat. I give precisely zero fucks that I look like I just climbed out of the 1910s, and I don't give a shit if a bunch of Seattle hipsters wearing Patagonia shit snicker at me when we cross on the trail.
Be your own person, be yourself. Don't let other people tell you what you should and should not look like. I think there are practical reasons why I wouldn't want to wear a military-style ruck as compared to the normal backpacking setup, but if it works for you and makes you happier while enjoying the outdoors that's all that matters.
