Public water supplies filter and treat their water, some people don't like taking chances and are often people who have gotten sick after drinking bad water. No quicker way to fuck up a good trip than a case of the suits that immodium won't touch. I use pic related most of the time on its own, but have a filter if need be and alum if that's necessary. On muddy rivers its just a matter of removing sediment. It is aesthetic but who wants to drink water that tastes like mud?
