Cats like to be stimulated with something to see or sniff in-between their constant napping, they don't really like to hang around you the same way dogs do.
If you are standing around a cat will want to wander and you can't exactly just tie them up because they will climb a tree and hang themselves.
I started off with carrying him to empty the garbage and then moved onto bike rides, then little walks/forest trails and then short hikes.
