>>2260912I don't know about that, I bought a cheap Collins axe the other day when I forgot my usual one and I swear to god the blade has eroded from chopping fucking kindling. That head has never touched a damned thinf other than wood and it looks like it has been through hell after a day of hard use and maybe 3 weeks of light use. That said I don't know where you would find anything better anymore, even the $200 meme axes use junk steel heads.
>>2260905I find the opposite to be true, the hardest of woods split like a dream where as softwoods deform and grab the maul. That said you are right on about two axes. When I'm felling I carry a boys axe to drive wedges and assist in delimbing, but when I'm splitting it's all done with a long handled 9 pound maul (in the field anyways, I only split small enough to make loading/lifting easy, I have a propper splitter for actually making firewood.).
