Almost always. I go /out/ with my dad once a year or so. Once I met up with an internet friend to hike some of the AT. 'Twas an alright experience, but I find that the emotions I get from being totally isolated can't be reproduced with company.
I'll probably sound stupid explaining it, but just being with nature, without responsibilities, social rules, goals, etc and doing nothing but being is really special.
One time at uni I went night hiking alone and heard coyotes howling. I know I'm not good coyote food, but after dark that was pretty scary. With that exception, I'm generally just content, unarmed and without bear spray.
