for thick wool sock you will probably need 1/2 bigger, and two socks 1-2 sizes bigger. Usually you use a sock liner that is thin, like silk or polypro or silk, and a wool outer.

Costco wool socks are cheaper and pretty darn good too. Buy socks from a colder place too, such as canadian wool products have been really good in my experience.

Most the market right now just wants merino wool, which is the softest wool because it is the thinnest micron. Some of the traditional stuff is scratchier, but will last forever so companies that have been making wool for the last 50 years often also use the thicker wools. A lot of wool business has gone out since the 1970s and wool quality has declined and the price has gone up until the last decade push for merino.
