Some arent though, they go back when something goes wrong and understand mountains arent going anywhere in their lifetime.
However true pros usually develop anti-social or borderline suicidal personalities, firstly because their lifestyle makes them understand the bullshit that is first world society and the freedom they have in the mountain, and then they do get a fix like a drug with oxygen deprivation and the influx of joy and overconfidence that is conquering a summit.
I'm just an amateur, but I can imagine myself rejecting the everyday bullshit that is living in a city and having a desk job if I climbed all year long.
If you havent seen it I recommend you watch Le Grand Bleu, a beautiful film. It illustrates very well the two most prominent types of extreme sportsmen in the two protagonists. It's about free diving but the principle still stands.
