>>2762344Yes anon, open water jigging and trolling in a kayak or canoe is a specific type of fishing. Wind is your worst enemy, i paddle into it and then let it drift me over the spot i intend to fish. If im trolling i might just give up, the problem is your probably like me using relatively light tackle and line.
Like that other anon said use a heavier 2-3 oz jig and then do as i described above before paddling back and repeating.
If your trolling only down to 30ft give or take, throw on a deep dive crank bait of any type that matches local bait fish and paddle around drop offs youll nail a fish every 20 minutes. Do zig-zags and mix your speed up.
If you wanna troll for lake trout down at 40 feet or below without a downrigger or steelcore line you need a 3 way swivel trolling system.
https://paddlingmag.com/skills/trolling-for-lake-trout/?ampThats a reliable method but dont make the lines from the swivel to your lure longer than a foot like it says too. Its annoying as hell to net fish when there is that much line out and they can swim under the boat.
All of the above should preferably done with braided line and a fluoro leader
