>>1228862>>>1228355 (You)>>>1228519>Is this the kind of puffy coat we're talking about? More like this. Lightweight, packable, synthetic fill so it retains insulation while wet.
>Why would you need a shell over that?Because they aren't waterproof and if you don't open up the vents on a shell it also helps with heat retentions.
>I really don't like the feel of synthetic materials (mostly) and fleece especially.Well, down fill and cotton lose most of their insulation capabilties once wet, and down won't dry out for a VERY long time.
Wool sweaters can be good but either
1)heavy
Or
2)extremely expensive
You're not gonna feel the fleece anyway, it's not against your skin, it's against your baselayers.
Synthetics BTFO natural fiber mid and outer layers (for baselayers I like wool in the cold and synthetic in the heat) for serious /out/ use. The performance:weight:price ratios are so much better it's hilarious. But hey, ignore the advice of people who know what they're talking about and LoTR LARP if that's what you wanna do.
