>fishing license
As soon as you can prove you’re a resident, go to a walmart or pretty much anywhere that sells fishing stuff and tell them you want to get a license. You’ll fill out a form and pay $28 for a year. Another $30 for a trout stamp. You only need the latter if you plan on keeping them. (The license expires at the end of February no matter when you buy it.) You can fish on almost any public bodies of water in the state, with a few exceptions. Grab a fishing guide for free when you pick up your license for all the little details that can change year to year.

I don’t have much to say about it. It’s constantly under construction. Has horrible traffic and floods a lot. So, it’s just like every other city in the southeast. Make sure your new place is up away from streams. That nice little creek next to your new house is going to crest its banks every few years.
>canoeing/kayaking
It’s pretty nice. There are tons of lakes and rivers with public boat ramps, everything from calm lakes to white water. On weekends in the summer along the Tennessee River, yacht owners will anchor in the inlets, tether 30+ boats together and party. Personally I think it’s more enjoyable to go on a weekday. So it’ll just be you and the fishermen. The Tennessee River also has barge traffic. So watch out for that if you’re in the main channel.
