Paracord is only widely used because it's cheap to produce and thus used as a general purpose cord, and was prominently used in paratrooper survival techniques, the main reason of this being that they're "paratroopers", and as such, they usually have something called a "parachute", which contains quite a lot of "paracord".
I saved this picture from a while back, an attempt to have people use something else than paracord. Paracord is so behind compared with modern cords, I'm amazed it's still being produced for civilian use, and hasn't been replaced by better cords that wouldn't even be more expensive to produce.
