Avoid Glasgow. Edinburgh is boring now since fringe is over with and all the foreigners and students have fucked off. Scotland's not a hard place to camp, even in the highlands, especially if you're as experienced as you are. Aberdeen is nice, I'd recommend going there for a day, great food. Sorry I can't speak much for hiking routes or campsites, I've never done it up in Scotland. Whereabouts are you from, OP? Your experience with the natives will vary wildly depending on where you're from.
