Bad news. One of the 11 ducklings died (pic a few mins before it passed on). No symptoms until about 5 hours ago when it suddenly became lethargic. I thought maybe it was nutrient deficiency but the rest are in tip top condition. I look for lethargic, limping, splayed, snotty, etc ducklings constantly and the only time I noticed this one was when another duckling crapped on it. That means it wasn't getting up when another duckling was on top and it wasn't cleaning itself (big tip if you are raising chicks or ducklings). I sequestered it, but whatever was wrong took it fairly swiftly. I checked its digestive tract and no wood shavings or impaction was found though it was obvious it had not been eating right for a while.
Now, I'm up to changing their bedding 2 times a day, their water every 4ish hours, and food every 6 hours. They will go outside for short times this Wednesday-Thrusday in a tractor with a heat lamp and supervision. Hopefully, they can enhance their diet and foraging skills for a while when things are nice and warm out. Their diet right now is mostly non-medicated chick starter; also some apple, peach, pea, chard all minced, mashed, and pasteurized. They gobble that stuff down like crazy.
Batch 2 duck eggs are scheduled to start hatching this Wednesday. Hopefully, that goes well. I may hear peeping as early as tomorrow night and pipping in the morning on Wednesday.
