So /out/ I'm planning to hike across the Alps this summer, west to east, for as far as I can get before I need to return. I'm wondering what to do about maps. Should I buy a bunch of maps that cover my rough route before I go and take them all with me? Or should I bring a map of my starting area and buy new ones as I go outside the boundaries covered by the previous map? Only ever hiked for a few days in the UK, only ever needed one map.
Also general summer hiking thread. What are people planning? First long hike?
Other things I may as well ask y'all:
Should I be worried about traveling alone?
How possible is it to hike off-trail and camp in the Alps? Switzerland is pretty closed, what about France, Austria, Germany, Slovenia?
I'm planning on getting practice with wilderness skills on the way, so hunting, shelter construction etc etc. - is this a good idea to get started on being a proper survivalist?
As far as clothes, I have the usual tough shorts, tshirt, long shirt, trousers, waterproofs, comfortable boots and socks - anything else I need?
Finally, is the SAS Survival Handbook a decent source of info? Should I take any bits of it with a pinch of salt?
Cheers y'all
