February 2018 my friend and I went on our first overnight trip on the Appalachian Trail from the start of the approach trail at Amicalola to the shelter at Black mountain. We were totally inexperienced but extremely enthusiastic and ended up not being able to sleep because the temperature dipped below freezing. We ended up hiking back through the night to the Hike Inn where we crashed on the couches in the game room until we were woken up when an employee came in and lit the wood stove before sunrise. They let us stay for breakfast after we watched the sunset, absolute fucking saints. We're more experienced now but that hike was our most memorable because when everything goes according to plan you forget it pretty soon.
