>>1140935Get a headlamp that does at least white and red light, preferably both with different brightness settings (at least the white light should be quite dimmable).
Also get a handheld flashlight that can be very bright but also dim. Carry both on you at all times and bring some extra batteries too.
As far as other stuff is concerned it's really just boots with good ankle support (sprained ankles are lot more likely inna dark and also a lot scarier). Backpack to carry layers of clothes... it's cool at night but you don't want to start sweating if you're walking a lot.
Don't bring any "menacing" type weapons. Yes you might have a knife on you as a tool, a hatchet if you're camping, but packing a gun or swinging a sheddy around is going to be trouble if you bump into someone else or the pollies. Particularly if you're technically trespassing, or UrBexing.
Some booze is also fun but don't overdo it, especially alone.
Finally, you'll need to screw your courage down because you can easily get spoop'd the fuck out in the woods alone in the dark. In once sense it's comforting to have the light on, but in the other sense having a light on means everything and everyone can see you.
I've been doing this almost every weekend for years - even over winter we go out a couple times a month. Sometimes I've gone out alone for various reasons as well and can hold it together... but it can get quite spoopy.
P.S. If you aren't into photography get into it! Long night time exposures are the bee's tits.
