>>1263622Sweet. It looks a little like a straight chuchwarden - are you going to make more? I finished my first pipe a few days ago - not a single part of it went as planned. The blocks of briar I have are way too small - about 35mm. I'd need a metal lathe with a better jaw and a precision bit to make a round shape. They're (I think) suited for pipes in line with the Savinelli Lolita. Real dinky pipes.
I nearly binned it after the jaws I have took a chunk out of it, but decided my expectations were too high. So I shaped it as best I could with a file, and used it to work out the mechanics of sanding/staining/finishing. I've a decent idea how much to sand, at what grit, and what marks (obvious ones aside) to look for now.
It's a piece of shit, but I'm happy it came out looking like a pipe. Even better that it's usable. I'm going to burn through the rest of these small blocks and try out a few different stains while I wait the larger blocks (and a spoon bit) to turn up.
