Fuck's sake faggots. Just use what works for you and your situation.
I've used both kelly kettle and pot+lid methods.
Irish fag here with nearly a consecutive year total spent camping in all conditions: Kelly kettle is far more practical here.
It pisses rain constantly.
It's windy, exposed, regularly gale/hurricane force 1.
Ground is saturated.
Fuel, unless small sticks, grass, bracken etc are often saturated, or non-existant.
Standard fire methods are difficult and impractical outdoors.
Kelly kettle gets around these difficulties. Get the full kit and you can cook on it too, it isn't that big, packs into itself, store fire making kit and tinder inside chiminy. Heats water in 5 mins, cooks meal in same. Bit of soot inside chimeny, clean with handfull of grass. Clean rest normal. Done.
If your environment lets you cook and make fire outdoors, good for you. It's nice to have cover, low wind, open-fire suitable fuel and reasonably dry conditions. If you have those, don't get a kettle, enjoy your traditional campfire. Next time it is blowing 40mph+, try making a traditional cooking fire with wet matchsticks to understand. Again, get what works for you in your environment. Less dickishness here, more constructive dialogue; lets keep this board good.
