Because if you don’t have a GoreTex shell over that down jacket and it rains, I guarantee that you will be cold, wet and miserable.

Down is a great insulator but unlike wool or even cheep polyester, its useless when wet and water "resistant" ain't going to cut it, any shell or outerlayer needs to be waterPROOF.

Back in 2014 during the Snowpocalypse, I almost bought an LL Bean Maine Warden's 3-in-1 parka, with a zip-in down coat and GoreTex parka shell, that looked pretty bad ass and comfy but the closest store is in Chicago and I didn’t want to mail-order something that expensive ($300, IIRC?) without trying it on.

That's the L.L. Bean "Maine Warden's 3-in-1" parka, with a GoreTex shell parka and zip-in down liner jacket, which I was considering the year after the Snowpocalypse winter of two years back, but it's pretty expensive and unless there is an L.L.Bean store in your state where you can check it out, you'll have to roll the dice and mail-order it.

After the bad winter of two years ago, I was going to buy an L.L.Bean Maine Warden's parka, with a down inner coat and GoreTex outer shell (with detachable hood) but they're pretty expensive and the nearest L.L.Bean store where I could check one out, is in Chicago (and I'm in Detroit).

Ended up buying a cheep pair of insulated nylon bibs off Amazon and that along with my existing winter jacket, (Cabela's 3-Season jacket) has worked out pretty well for snowblowing and ice fishing.
