i have a tarp outside that im holding taut with 2 clove hitches on 1 end, and 2 taut-line hitches on the other. pulling and dressing the taut-line hitches should keep the tarp flat, though to employ mechanical advantage (and increase tension on the tarp) you generally use a truckers hitch, which is cord ran around the pole, back through a midline loop in itself, then pulled backed down into a tautline hitch on itself
