if you want to grow it as an annual, you'd plant it in the fall when nothing else is going on, and harvest it around summer the next year but you'll have to dry the bulbs so they don't rot away. at ambient temperatures they might last 2 months this way
but if you have a root cellar or somewhere proper to store them, they'll last a good year
