Could be a fungus (fat-sweats make great fungi homes!)
Could be lacking proper victims
Could be caused by oft repeated wetting/drying cycles (inna/outa pools a lot, etc)
My bet is fungus. I've got toenail fungus!
Protip: Wool socks and leather boots all day inna summer are a great way to into fungi. But I like to think of myself as a benevolent god, allowing this primitive life to continue. Until it causes a problem. Them WHAMO! Blowout /now/, Stalker! Chemical Death rains down from On High and washes away their entire race, purifying the land once more! Aahahahahaha!!!!
Errr... Anyways... Soft toenails are a thing but it's so easy to avoid it might as well be a lifestyle choice...
