A knife is lighter and it can be carried on belt. Yes you can attach a hatchet on your belt too, but it's uncomfortable and even dangerous if you fall. The only task where hatchet wins hands down is felling a huge tree and that rarely happens. Everything else a batoning knife does as well or better than a hatchet plus it's safer to use.
