It's less toxic than pure iodine solution and it doesn't hurt in open wounds. You can use it to irrigate and disinfect, then put the bandage right on it.
I use it exclusively and i never get swollen cuts. It looks gruesome because it's red. But it feels much less aggressive in a wound than even water.
Of course if you planted your palm into fine gravel or sand I'd still flush with water first, just so that I wouldn't use up my whole squeeze bottle of Povidone-iodine in one go. It isn't expensive, but it keeps forever.
There's solution for open wounds and also gel for bandaging.
