I learned woodcraft, backpacking, land navigation, etc., from my father, not the Scouts. In school, the local boy scouts used to brag about the horrible stuff they did on their trips, like shitting in the middle of the trail, or finding a bunch frogs and slamming them against rocks. My father wouldn't let me join the Scouts because the leader of the local pack was an idiot. Later, a sub-group split off, led by the father of a good friend of mine. I never formally joined, but went on a couple awesome field trips with them. We went to Hamilton Air Force Base when that was still active, got a tour of the tower and a look around in a cargo plane. Later we went to Alameda Naval Air Station, where we saw an air show and went on a tour of the USS Enterprise (CVN 65), biggest fucking ship I have ever been on. I recall sitting in some cockpits, talking with some of the seamen about what they did, etc. That was fun. None of the scouts in that group wore the uniform, but we got to go places the general public wasn't allowed. Also, my friend's father was a plumbing contractor who did work on military bases in theSan Francisco Bay Area, so we got to go to some interesting places.
