A big-ish reasonably modern dirt bike will run you $2-3k. You can find them with some miles, maybe in need of some work, for $1500-2000. A title/plate usually adds $500-800 to the price tag.
Some bikes hold their value better than others. Saw a 525 EXC a few months ago, same year as mine with about as many miles, for about what I paid for mine 5 years ago.
