I'd feel extremely nervous about using small arms, just seems plausible that I wouldn't kill them all before they reached me. If you sink the boat it's not a problem, now they have to swim to you if they're still alive. Don't sink the boat, they can still get on board.
Probably best bet is if you have a buddy to steer, tell them to haul ass in the opposite direction while you fire on them.
