Yahoo! I caught my first brook trout today! Based on a glance at this new-to-me stream, I decided to fish tenkara today. The stream was tiny, the weeds were tall, and I was throwing terrestrials. The first spot you can get to from the parking lot featured some risers, so I casted to them, but they weren't committing hard enough. I switched to an ant, and it worked. I launched a tiny brook trout into the brush behind me.
After this episode, I decided to move on. Almost the entire stream was inaccessible because of deep muck or tall grass. I followed the mowed trail and eventually completed the circle. Even though it was getting dark, I decided to try the first spot, but there was a beaver, so I went down to a small section i hadn't fished. Lots of rising fish. I had a kebari tied on, one that was given to me at a conference by a local well-known figure in the tenkara world. I was casting as far as I could (one of the downsides of tenkara), and I got a bite. It was much bigger than the first, and he was getting me stuck in the weeds. I let him free himself, and I pull the fish in. Based on rudimentary measurements, that brook trout was about 11 inches. I am very pleased.
