I think part of the problem was that when I wrote the subject line, I had a different thread in mind and then I suddenly thought about the time I went off the road in a nasty blizzard and ended up writing a whole different thread. The original thread idea was going to be a whole list of gear, with this picture, and was going to be about bugging out with a hammock and shelter, etc. So the use of the words "bug out" in the subject are misleading. This is more about unplanned emergencies, not planning IN CASE OF an emergency.
Ideally, though, YES. If you have the trunk space, then you definitely want a good basic set up like
