You can definitely do it though and many people do (Tim Watson on YouTube can give you some ideas on how he does it. Shugemry has some videos on using pads as well). If you have an old sleeping bag, try modifying it into an underquilt. I have an old, down rectangular sleeping bag that I used as my first underquilt.
