I fished an egg sack on a size 8 hook with a split shot 8-10 inches up, and the line maybe a foot longer than the depth, tinking it off the bottom . Never caught a single fish. I used a rapala, second cast caught a steelhead. Used a maribou jig with a minnow and caught a salmon. That being said, people catch them with eggs. Long rod and know where they are.
