Whether it's a car/automotive unit, hiking/boating/"outdoors" receiver... new model or 15 years old... GPS or smartphone... they're receiving the same signals.
Newer units with DGPS (WAAS/EGNOS) can pinpoint a little closer due to the differential adjustment. Phones can lock in faster since they've got AGPS through cellular.
If you can find a GPS72 for under $100 (personally I wouldn't do it unless it was <$80), go for it.
For the features the 72 offers, IMO you're better off going with a cheaper eTrex (I see them for ~$50 on craigslist every week), or spending a little more money and getting a more capable receiver (color, expandable maps, USB).
If you're adding maps to a GPS, it's worth upgrading to a color display. Makes a huge difference in terms of readability on the map page over the grayscale units.
