Find some public hunting grounds then google earth it. Get an idea of terrain as well as good entry/exit points. If you plan on venturing far from your vehicle please know how to fucking navigate your way back.

If you have friends that have land that's gonna be a lot better for ya. Public land can be frustrating to say the least.

Gotta say I'm glad to see a beginner hunting thread where someone is actually knowledgable on laws and regs already.

Not him but they do exactly what they are called "foot hold". Ideally you want a catch on the front foot right above the joint. I've released quite a few oppossums after caught in footholds with no harm. Basically the foot caught in the trap gets circulation restricted and falls asleep. I'll just rub the foot a few times after I removed trap and then let em go.

The concept people have about then breaking legs and such comes from using large traps for smaller animals. If I set bear foothold (which are illegal) and a coon or coyote gets it then yea there's gonna be damage.
