Red always seems to be a popular colour with toothy fish like pike and muskellunge. I suppose, visually, it simulates a bleeding/injured fish or animal which tells them "easy prey." Poppers should work great with smallies and largemouth. It really doesn't take much to get a bite from fish in the freshwater sunfish family (largemouth, rock bass, bluegill, pumpkinseed...). They're all rather feisty by nature. Aside from poppers I'd say maybe chartreuse streamers with generous flash. Maybe white and blue with with blue krystal flash (pic related). The attached image is a fly-equivalent to one of my favourite colours for soft-plastics.
