I vaguely remember Wim laughing in reference to his trip up Mt. Everest; stating something along the lines of "We are not built to climb Everest."
If you've ever seen footage of people climbing Everest, you'd understand that it would be impossible to reach the top without the necessary gear. Wim probably made it much farther than the average Joe using his method, but once you hit a certain point you simply cannot survive without oxygen tanks.
His method doesn't make you a super hero, but it undoubtedly has helped me out in the wild.
