I have a couple of pic related, which you can find in any sporting goods store in the US for about $10, they are fairly solid if you can fix the terrible edge they come with (a friend bought one that was practically a hammer). They are under many names, Coleman, Coghlans, etc.
I also have a Fiskars X7 hatchet which works well. Mine came with some bad steel on the edge that rolled on first use, but I resharpened it and its held the edge well since. It was $20 off Amazon at the time.
In a lot of cases, the key to getting a decent axe isn't shelling out a lot of money, but rather knowing how to reprofile the edge yourself. You can do that with a good file, or a belt sander if you keep the metal from overheating.
