>>2147303i used to go fishing every week but was always bad at it, learned the knots and bought the tackle but never caught that much. haven't even gone in several years.
next weekend im heading down to southern MO for a camping trip and i wanna try catching and eating my own fish. never done it before. can anyone give me some tips for success on this? pic related is from the conservation site; i'll be passing through both the white and blue ribbon areas so probably best to adhere to their rules the whole trip. here's what i have going on my head right now after a small amount of research:
>bass: just gonna release these if i catch any because it seems sinful to kill them>trout: good fish to eat but im likely not gonna catch something long enough to keep>suckers: supposed to taste good but really hard to filet>drum: supposedly tastes bad. online people say they're everywhere but pic related says they're the least common fish in that area>pickeral/walleye: i know nothing about these at all>sunfish: too small to be worth trying to eatalso thnking about buying a fly fishing rod for this. would this significantly improve my chances of catching something worth eating or should i just stick to my regular rod? any recommendations for beginner rods(~$60)?
any suggestions for storing fish until dinner? was just gonna smack them on the head to kill them and then throw them in a dry sack, maybe in the cooler maybe not.
