The divide between EUP and WUP is pretty intuitive, actually. The West is hilly and the East is marshy. It's all rocky, the whole peninsula, but there's a big difference in the types of terrain (and weather) you're liable to find here. There's not a great distance between Marquette (W) and, say, Chatham (E) but you can tell that they're in different regions.
A region like the Rock River wilderness is more valuable in the EUP, frankly, because it's rocks and plateaux in a region of marshes and creeks. Clearcuts are a perpetual eyesore around here; Michigan runs the state forests for just that purpose. Camping is secondary. You can learn to live with loggers, though.
