not op, but I've been hiking every year hundreds of miles in sandals (chacos or tevas or cheap knockoffs) and not once have i twisted an ankle. if anything, my ankles are tougher now because my body supports them, rather than letting them get soft from boot supports.
the one time I twisted my ankle was during a hike in the snow when I was using boots. it wasn't the boots' fault either; i stepped into a hole that was not visible in the snow, so sprained the ankle. my ankle swole, had to go back down, took two weeks off to recover (fastest recovery compared to past times), and I was back on the mountain, with sandals instead.
