DIY ultralight smartwater bottle hydration hose with bite valve, 35 grams.
parts: silicone hose, hose step down adapter (one side must fit hose OD, other side must fit hose ID), smartwater bottle cap, pipette, brand new thin razor blade, lighter, sanding block
1. cut hose adapter in half, cut the cap off of the sports cap.
2. melt the bottom of the smaller half of the adapter to create a plug, for if you want to remove the bite valve and seal it.
3. press fit the larger half of the adapter into the opening on the smartwater bottle cap.
4. carefully melt the top first, and then all 4 sides one at a time and weld the plastics together with pressure. be careful not to overly deform anything (can be fixed with drilling or heating an object with similar diameter.)
5. sand down the top a little bit.
6. insert hose far enough to reach the bottom of 1L smartwater bottle. fill a bottle with water and screw the cap on. plug the end of the hose. squeeze the bottle and test for leaks.
7. repeat step 4 until the bottle reliably seals under pressure. you can melt the plastic into the silicone hose without fear of melting the hose, if water is in it.
8. optional step: remove the cap & hose from bottle. fill the void with some liquid silicone.
9. create bite valve by taking a pipette and cutting most of the stem off. take a brand new, extra fine razor blade and cut a | or + shape into the end of the pipette to preference.
i might replace it with a store bought bite valve but here's a pretty good DIY trick that works better than anything you can buy for the same task.
