Hi OP.
I have quite a bit of experience camping and hiking and working in Fer de Lance areas.
They're definitely a threat, but you shouldn't be too concerned if you take some precautions.
1- don't walk around barefoot
2- be extra careful in long grass
3- be extra careful when walking through leaves and logs
4- don't go around breaking up rotten logs (lots of other snakes and spiders will be in there)
5- bring rubber boots -- they are great foot/leg protection
6- go looking for them! once you see a few your brain will have the "search image" and you'll be able to spot them and other snakes more easily and thus avoid walking on them.
Fer de Lances aren't out to get you, and most of the time can be found curled up on or under leaves.
I used to catch them, live, for reasons of biology/science. In some areas they are the most common snake, and I've had more than a few come into camp. At that point we usually (depending on where I'm working) destroy them by smashing them with sticks.
Almost all of the time you'll find them on the ground, but be weary of the trees and vegetation as well for other snakes, and possibly a few species of spider of concern.
stay away from centipedes!
