Upside down fire is super-erior in almost all situations, from normal backyard funtimes to rainy woods camping to desolate snow camping. Not only does it allow you to burn big nasty wet and rotten logs, but even with nice dry wood it allows you to set it and forget it. Once your pile is made it requires minimal maintenance for many hours.
Pic related, but I've legit pulled up rotten tree stumps and piled unsplit log rounds and put them at the bottom and they all burn away eventually. Most convenient fire ever (and one of the warmest as well).
