When they crossed the continent they encountered native tribes that could already speak english and french and had firearms. This was because of French fur traders operating through what would become Canada. They also encountered villages that were completely empty, scourged by disease. The epidemics started that far back.
The natives were highly impressed with their air rifle though, they'd never seen such a thing, so they thought it was magic. Pic related, the air rifle.
