bullshit, I live in North Dakota and it gets down to like -30F, they still work fine. You can carry them in your pocket to keep them from working less efficiently.

A ferro rod wears down eventually, too. On a long enough timeline, you're going to run out of everything. Pack 2 or 3 if you're going to be gone for a while.
